A major step has been taken to improve student accommodation and tenant protection in Ghana following the launch of the NUGS RentCare App, a new platform designed to help students report housing-related problems and access support.
The initiative was introduced after persistent complaints from students over accommodation challenges across the country, including unfair rent practices, weak tenancy documentation, poor complaint resolution systems and recurring disputes with landlords and agents.
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) led the intervention with support from the National Tenants Union of Ghana (NATUG), CFLED and the Office of the Rent Commissioner under the Rent Control Department.
The partners say the platform is intended to create a structured support system that will improve accommodation experiences for students and strengthen tenant protection mechanisms nationwide.
Speaking at the launch, Reindolph Afrifa-Oware said student tenant protection must move beyond advocacy and produce practical results.
“Tenant protection must move beyond advocacy into practical systems that work for people. Students form one of the largest tenant populations in Ghana and they deserve access to information, proper tenancy documentation and clear channels to seek support,” he said.
He explained that the initiative is not only about receiving complaints, but also about building a more responsible accommodation culture among students and landlords.
“This initiative is not only about receiving complaints. It is about education, prevention, accountability and building a culture of responsible tenancy. When students understand both their rights and responsibilities, accommodation outcomes improve for everyone,” he said.
Mr Afrifa-Oware added that the collaboration behind the app shows what can be achieved when institutions focus on practical solutions.
“This collaboration demonstrates what can happen when institutions work together around practical solutions. We are creating a system that encourages lawful complaint handling, protects students and strengthens confidence in accommodation processes,” he said.
NATUG expressed appreciation to NUGS, CFLED, the Office of the Rent Commissioner, student leaders, stakeholders and development partners for supporting the initiative.
Students across the country are being encouraged to use the NUGS RentCare App through rentcontrolghana.com to lodge accommodation-related complaints and seek help.
Stakeholders say the app marks the beginning of a stronger partnership aimed at promoting lawful tenancy, responsible accommodation practices and better housing outcomes for students in Ghana.
