The Girl Child Education Officer for the Pusiga District in the Upper East Region, Bukari Jemila, has raised concern over the case of a 17-year-old girl who is at risk of being forced into marriage after completing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to Madam Jemila, the girl was recently rescued by her office after her parents allegedly arranged to marry her off to a man who already has two wives.
Concerns Over Girl’s Future
She said that despite the intervention, the parents remain determined to proceed with the marriage plans, threatening the girl’s education and future.
Madam Jemila described the situation as disturbing and a violation of the rights of the girl child.
She stressed that every girl deserves the opportunity to continue her education and pursue her ambitions instead of being pushed into early marriage.
Call for Government Intervention
The education officer appealed to government and security agencies to intervene and ensure the girl remains protected and in school.
She also called for stronger enforcement of laws against child marriage and increased public education on the importance of girls’ education.
Issue Raised at Education Engagement
Madam Jemila made the appeal while speaking to GBC News during an education engagement session organised by BEWDA.
The programme focused on improving access to education and addressing barriers affecting girls in rural communities.
