A 21-year-old final-year student at A.M.E Zion Senior High School in the Central Region has died after being attacked by bees on campus.
The deceased, Emmanuella Quainoo, had enrolled in the private school for remedial classes to improve her science results following a previous WASSCE attempt.
According to reports, she was swarmed by bees around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, while on the school premises.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, where medical staff reportedly recommended urgent care, including a blood transfusion. However, her condition worsened, and she died the following day.
Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, March 19, her grandmother, Vida Ayi Mensah, recounted the incident.
“We heard she had been attacked by bees at school, so we rushed there and took her to the hospital. She passed away the next day,” she said.
She added that the family had already begun purchasing prescribed medication when they received news of her death.
“She asked us to buy medications, which we had already done, and they also said she’d need a blood transfusion. While at the pharmacy, I was called that she had died,” she explained.
Emmanuella’s decision to enrol in remedial classes reflected her determination to improve her academic performance, making her death particularly painful for her family and community.
The incident has raised concerns about student safety on school campuses, particularly regarding exposure to natural hazards and the need for rapid emergency response systems.
As of now, school authorities and local health officials have not issued an official statement on the incident or any preventive measures.
Her death has sparked discussions on the importance of preparedness and timely medical intervention, especially in cases involving severe insect attacks or allergic reactions.
Family members, friends, and the wider community continue to mourn the tragic loss of the young student.
