The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has conferred a Distinguished Fellow Award on the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to academia, leadership, and national development.
The prestigious honour was conferred at a Special Congregation held at the New Examination Centre of the University.
According to the University, the award recognises Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s distinguished service to UCC as an alumna and Fellow, as well as her commitment to society, women and children, academia, governance, democracy, leadership, and national and global development.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Omanhen of Oguaa, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II; the Central Regional Minister, Eduardo Ekow Panyin Okyere; and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, among other distinguished personalities.
In a citation read by the immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, the University paid tribute to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s historic achievement as the first female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, describing her election as a transformational moment in the country’s democratic and gender representation history.
The citation also highlighted her pioneering role at UCC, where she became the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, a position she held from 2008 to 2012.
During her tenure, the University noted, she strengthened academic standards and enhanced the institution’s reputation as one of Ghana’s leading centres of higher education.
