The University of Cape Coast (UCC) will confer its Distinguished Fellow Award on the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in recognition of her contributions to academia, governance and national development.
According to a press release issued by the University, the award also honours her service to UCC as an illustrious alumna and former Vice-Chancellor, as well as her commitment to advancing education, women’s empowerment and democratic leadership.
The University noted that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s elevation as Ghana’s first female Vice President marks a historic milestone in the country’s democratic and gender representation journey.
The citation further highlights her role as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017, where she contributed to strengthening basic and secondary education, teacher development initiatives, and expanding access to quality education, particularly for girls and marginalised communities.
UCC also recognised her service as Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa, Zimbabwe, from 2018 to 2024, where she championed women’s access to higher education across the continent.
As an alumna of UCC, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also made history when she served as Vice-Chancellor of the University from 2008 to 2012, becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the New Examination Centre (NEC) of the University of Cape Coast at 2:00 p.m.
