Students of the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) have emerged as overall winners of the 2026 Commonwealth Day National Debate Competition held at Parliament House in Accra.
The competition, organised under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” brought together student representatives from six universities: Central University, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University for Development Studies (UDS), the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), UniMAC, and the University of Ghana.
Participants engaged in a lively exchange of ideas on the role of young people in fostering collaboration, innovation and shared prosperity across the Commonwealth of Nations.
The UniMAC team impressed judges with their compelling arguments, strong analytical reasoning and confident delivery, ultimately securing the top position in the highly competitive contest.
Students from KNUST placed first runner-up, also earning praise from the judges for their performance during the debate.
Judges commended the finalists for their clarity of thought, depth of analysis and excellent presentation skills, noting that the competition demonstrated the growing capacity of young people to contribute meaningfully to discussions on regional and global development.
The Commonwealth Day National Debate Competition forms part of activities marking Commonwealth Day celebrations in Ghana and aims to promote youth engagement in governance, dialogue and international cooperation among Commonwealth member states.
