The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has relieved Black Stars coach Chris Hughton of his duties with immediate effect.
“The GFA wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” the GFA published on its website on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
Furthermore, the technical team of the Black Stars has been dissolved. This decision follows after the Black Stars were held to a 2-2 draw with Mozambique on Monday evening at the Olympic Stadium in Abidjan after giving away a two-goal advantage in the space of six minutes in their final Group B match. As a result, the Black Stars ended their AFCON 2023 campaign in third place in Group B with only two points.
Chris Hughton has accepted responsibility for Ghana’s eleventh-hour draw against Mozambique at the Africa Cup of Nations, which prevented the Black Stars from advancing beyond the group stage once more.
“I take responsibility for this performance and admit my results with the Black Stars have not been good enough,” Hughton said at the post-match press conference.
The GFA has assured that a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars will be outlined in the coming days.
