The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and President of the Executive Committee of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA), Mrs. Jean Mensa, will host the inaugural meeting of women Chairpersons from eight African Election Management Bodies (EMBs) on August 5th and 6th, 2024.
This landmark event will gather women leaders from Cape Verde, Liberia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The meeting is organized under the auspices of the United Nations Development Program’s Regional Service Centre for Africa and the UN Electoral Assistance Division, in collaboration with International IDEA, the AAEA, and the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The primary objective of the meeting is to establish a continental network of Senior Electoral Administrators to foster peer support and collaboration among women in election management across Africa.
Additionally, the meeting will review international and regional normative frameworks concerning women’s political participation in Africa.
A press statement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman, Operations of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, revealed that this significant event marks a step forward in enhancing the role of women in electoral leadership and promoting gender equality in political processes across the continent.
