Christina Koch, formerly Christina Hammock, a former exchange student of the University of Ghana, has been selected as a member of a four-member crew by NASA for the Artemis II mission, which is expected to be the first crewed flight around the Moon in over 50 years.
Koch, the only female member of the crew, joined the University of Ghana as an exchange student during the 1999/2000 academic year. During her stay, she studied courses including History of Ghana, History of Africa, Twi for Beginners, Music, and Rural Sociology.
The University of Ghana celebrated her in a Facebook post and described her achievement as a proud moment, noting that it reflects its commitment to training globally competitive students and leaders.
According to NASA, the Artemis II mission will test key systems needed for future human space exploration and lay the groundwork for returning astronauts to the Moon under the broader Artemis programme.
Christina Koch is an experienced astronaut who previously set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman during a mission aboard the International Space Station. Her selection for Artemis II marks another major milestone in her career and in global space exploration.
Her role as the only woman on the mission has drawn global attention and is being seen as an important moment for gender representation in space science.
The University of Ghana said her journey continues to inspire students and young people, especially women, to pursue careers in science and innovation.
The Artemis II mission is expected to play a key role in advancing human space exploration, with its success paving the way for future missions, including planned lunar landings and eventual journeys to Mars.
