The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwarnena Afenyo-Markin, has positioned student activism as central to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 electoral strategy, urging executives of the Tertiary Students’ Confederacy to mobilise strong grassroots support for Mahamudu Bawumia.
Addressing TESCON executives at Parliament House in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Afenyo-Markin called for what he described as a “mighty majority” for Dr Bawumia, signalling an early push to consolidate support ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“We want a mighty majority for Dr Bawumia,” he said, underscoring the importance of student mobilisation in securing electoral victory.
His remarks highlight a growing focus within the NPP on leveraging tertiary student networks as a strategic political base, particularly in shaping campaign narratives and influencing youth participation.
Mr Afenyo-Markin described Dr Bawumia as a “tried and tested leader with solutions,” reinforcing confidence in his leadership and ability to lead the party into the next election cycle.
He further stressed the need for unity and loyalty within the party ranks, urging TESCON members to align their efforts towards a shared political objective.
“As we prepare and go into election 2028… I’m counting on all of you to work towards a common goal,” he said.
The engagement also revealed the role of motivation and resilience among student activists.
Nana Boakye, TESCON President at the Christian Service University, acknowledged the party’s support but emphasised that commitment to the party’s cause often goes beyond financial incentives.
He recounted personal challenges faced for openly supporting the party, highlighting the importance of self-motivation and continued encouragement from party leadership.
