The National Chairman of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has cautioned that it is unrealistic for government to place all graduates on its payroll, stressing that Ghana’s limited tax revenue cannot sustain such an arrangement.
He therefore urged young people, particularly university students, to focus on identifying problems within their communities and developing practical solutions that can be transformed into sustainable businesses and employment opportunities.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah made the remarks during the launch of the Volta Youth Development Fund in Ho on Saturday, March 7, 2026, where he also donated GH¢500,000 to support the initiative.
He also highlighted the need for Ghana’s education system to move beyond preparing students to seek jobs and instead equip them with the skills needed to create employment and develop innovative solutions to societal challenges.
He expressed optimism that the Volta Youth Development Fund could serve as a model for other regions seeking practical solutions to the growing challenge of youth unemployment in the country.
The fund, conceived in 2025 by the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, aims to support young entrepreneurs and tackle youth unemployment in the region through a sustainable, interest-free revolving funding scheme.
Addressing participants at the launch, Mr. Gunu explained that the initiative was designed to empower young people with innovative ideas to start businesses and become drivers of economic development.
He reiterated that government alone cannot provide jobs for all graduates and encouraged the youth to focus on solving real societal problems and transforming them into viable business opportunities.
To demonstrate his commitment to the initiative, the Regional Minister pledged 10 percent of his monthly salary and made an additional GH¢20,000 contribution to support the sustainability of the fund.
He expressed appreciation to Johnson Asiedu Nketiah for officially launching the programme and for his generous financial support.
Mr. Gunu also acknowledged contributions from Mr. Daniel McKorley, who donated GH¢200,000, as well as Hon. Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, Hon. Stephen Adom, and Hon. Jerry Yaw Ameko, along with other sponsors, partners and dignitaries who attended the event.
According to him, the initiative represents a collective effort to create opportunities for young people in the region.
“Together, we are building a sustainable, interest-free revolving fund that will empower the youth of the Volta Region to become job creators and drivers of development,” he stated.
