The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended all inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region with immediate effect following violent clashes during recent zonal athletics competitions.
In a directive dated Sunday, February 22, 2026, the Central Regional Director of Education, Juliette Dufie Otami, cited “grave incidents of violence and clashes among students of competing schools” as the basis for the decision.
The suspension affects all Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) in the region and will remain in force until further notice.
Mrs. Otami noted that school sporting events are intended to “promote discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy rivalry,” but said these objectives had been compromised by acts of indiscipline and violence.
School heads have been instructed to halt all scheduled competitions, inform staff, students and stakeholders, and ensure strict compliance with the directive.
The temporary suspension, according to GES, will provide the opportunity to review safety protocols and put in place measures to prevent a recurrence.
“Management counts on your usual cooperation and leadership to ensure calm, discipline, and order within your schools during this period,” Mrs. Otami stated, emphasising the need to prioritise student safety.
The decision follows viral videos of violent clashes during the February 19, 2026, district inter-schools athletics competition in Agona Swedru, involving Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
The Ghana Police Service has since launched investigations into the incident.
GES has assured the public that inter-school sporting activities will resume only under conditions that guarantee safety, discipline and the spirit of healthy competition.
