The Ghana Education Service (GES) has sanctioned officials of Savelugu Senior High School following investigations into a feeding incident that sparked public concern after a video circulated on social media earlier this year.
In an official statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations of the Ghana Education Service, the Service said investigations established that students were “scheduled to be served jollof rice with eggs for supper,” but “the Supplier failed to supply the eggs.” Despite this, the statement said, the school “proceeded to serve the meal without eggs and assured the students that double protein would be served them in the subsequent meal.”
Management of the Service rejected that decision, stating that “management finds the school’s decision unacceptable, since an alternative measure could have been explored.”
The GES further disclosed that the headmaster was not on campus at the time of the incident, noting that he “was absent at the time of the incident, having obtained approval from the Municipal Director of Education.” According to the Service, the lapse resulted in “inadequate supervision by the school leadership at the time.”
The statement also linked the circulation of the video to political activity on the school premises. It said the incident occurred on a day when “the school’s dining hall had been booked for a New Patriotic Party (NPP) event in the constituency,” adding that “during this activity, a party member exploited the administrative lapse to record and mischievously circulate the video.” The New Patriotic Party was not accused of causing the feeding shortfall.
GES stressed that the episode was “an isolated occurrence” and that it “does not accurately represent the school’s typical feeding arrangements,” contrary to impressions created by the viral footage.
As part of corrective measures, the Service said it has “taken the necessary disciplinary action,” and that “the Municipal Director of Education has been temporarily assigned to oversee the school’s feeding arrangements.”
The Ghana Education Service assured parents, students, and the general public that “the provision of adequate and quality meals for students remains a key priority for the Ghana Education Service.”
