The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, has opened applications for admission into its Masters and PhD programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year.
In a notice issued by the School of Graduate Studies and published on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the University announced that a range of postgraduate programmes are available across its four colleges: the College of Humanities, College of Education, College of Health Sciences, and the College of Basic and Applied Sciences.
General Entry Requirements
For Masters programmes, applicants must possess a good first degree—preferably Second Class Lower or better, or a final grade point average of at least 2.0—in a relevant field from the University of Ghana or any recognised/accredited university. Applicants with Third Class degrees may be considered based on work experience or other qualifications.
Some departments may require applicants to undertake entrance examinations and/or interviews. In certain academic units, candidates may initially be admitted into MA or MSc programmes, with the possibility of upgrading to MPhil status after attaining an average of B+ or better in the first semester examinations.
For PhD programmes, applicants may apply with either a relevant Masters degree or a very good first degree.
Candidates applying with a Masters degree must have obtained it from the University of Ghana or another recognised/accredited institution.
Applicants with a strong first degree may also apply directly for PhD admission but will be required to complete Level 600 Masters courses in their first year. Upon successful completion, they will progress to the four-year PhD programme beginning at Level 700.
All PhD programmes at the University are fee-paying, with durations set at four years for full-time students and six years for part-time students.
