The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Astria Learning, a United States-based EdTech organisation, to establish an artificial intelligence-powered digital e-campus aimed at expanding access to higher education.
The agreement, signed at UCC, formalises a long-term collaboration between the University and Astria Learning to integrate AI-driven systems, digital academic services and scalable infrastructure into the University’s academic delivery.
The initiative is expected to enable UCC to offer short courses as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through Astria Learning’s digital platforms, allowing learners from different parts of the world to access its programmes remotely.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Professor Denis Aheto, who signed on behalf of the University, described the partnership as a transformative step in the institution’s digital evolution.
“This partnership was initiated during a networking session at a conference in Kampala, Uganda, and today marks the beginning of a bold and forward-looking relationship, one that embodies a transformative vision for the future of higher education in Ghana and beyond,” he said.
According to him, the University undertook a rigorous evaluation process before committing to the partnership.
“An ad hoc committee was constituted to examine the academic, operational, financial and strategic implications of the proposed collaboration,” he explained.
He added that a high-level delegation from UCC undertook a benchmarking visit to the University of Malawi’s eCampus and Astria Learning to gain first-hand insights into the model.
“This engagement provided valuable clarity on governance arrangements, admissions and quality assurance mechanisms, recruitment strategies, and financial sustainability frameworks,” Prof. Aheto said.
He noted that the partnership would enhance UCC’s international visibility and enable the scalable growth of its academic programmes.
“The committee’s findings were clear and compelling. Astria Learning’s platform will enhance UCC’s global visibility, expand international student recruitment, strengthen operational efficiency, and enable the scalable growth of academic programmes,” he stated.
Prof. Aheto further announced that the first cohort of students under the e-campus model is expected to begin in August 2026, with plans to scale progressively to 10,000 active learners annually.
“This initiative will usher UCC into a new era of digital innovation, broadening access to quality education and reinforcing our standing as a leader in higher learning across Africa,” he added.
For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Astria Learning, Dr. Jeff Bordes, described the agreement as a strategic step towards expanding access to quality higher education.
“I like to say that universities are remembered for two things: the knowledge they protect and the future they unlock. Today, the University of Cape Coast chooses to do both,” he said.
Dr. Bordes emphasised that the partnership would not compromise UCC’s academic authority.
“Academic authority remains with UCC. Faculty oversight remains with UCC. Quality assurance remains with UCC. What changes is access—and access is transformative,” he stated.
He further explained that Astria Learning would provide capital investment, technological infrastructure, global marketing, digital library resources, proctoring systems and AI-powered academic support tools to support the e-campus ecosystem.
The Astria Learning CEO was accompanied by the organisation’s Global Operations Coordinator, Ms. Ana Eristavi, and a staff member, Mr. Maxwell Acheampong, at the signing ceremony.
The collaboration forms part of UCC’s broader strategy to modernise higher education delivery and expand opportunities for students and professionals who may not be able to pursue traditional on-campus education.
