Professor Peter Wisdom Atadja of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has been awarded the 2026 President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) Visiting Scientist Award by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The award, announced by the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) and CAS, recognises Prof. Atadja’s contributions to global scientific innovation and his leadership in advancing international research collaboration.
Prof. Atadja, a faculty member and past Dean of the UHAS School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences (SBBS), is also Chief Scientific Officer and consultant to Landcent, a global health technology company developing malaria prevention products. He is widely known for his pioneering work in cancer drug discovery and development at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, as well as his recent efforts targeting poverty-related diseases, particularly malaria.
Under the terms of the PIFI programme, Prof. Atadja will undertake a six-month research engagement in China in 2026. During this period, he will collaborate with research teams at SIOC and other leading institutions under the Chinese Academy of Sciences system.
UHAS described the award as not only a personal milestone for Prof. Atadja but also a significant international recognition for the University. The fellowship is expected to strengthen UHAS’ core research areas, including tropical disease control and drug molecular design, through exposure to advanced technologies and research outputs.
The programme is also anticipated to facilitate the establishment of joint talent training initiatives between UHAS and CAS institutions, providing opportunities for young researchers to gain international exposure and technical expertise.
According to UHAS, the research collaboration will contribute to public health efforts in both Ghana and China. The outcomes are expected to support malaria control strategies, including addressing imported malaria cases and vector control measures, while enhancing Ghana’s efforts towards malaria elimination.
Prof. Atadja’s research stay is further expected to deepen institutional ties between UHAS and leading CAS-affiliated institutes such as the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica and the Institute of Microbiology, paving the way for joint research projects, academic exchanges, and conference collaborations.
UHAS has pledged its full support to Prof. Atadja, describing the PIFI award as a strategic opportunity to expand international partnerships and accelerate innovation in healthcare science education and research.
