The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate the violent attack on the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) and apply the appropriate disciplinary sanctions against those found responsible.
The directive follows the violent disturbance at the school, which resulted in the indefinite closure of the institution after students allegedly attacked the headmaster over unverified claims linking him to the burial of a foetus on the school campus.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, on Wednesday, August 5, the Ministry said the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, had instructed GES to urgently investigate the incident.
“The Honourable Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately take up the matter, commence a full investigation into the disturbance, and apply the appropriate disciplinary sanctions against all persons found culpable, in accordance with the laws and regulations governing the education sector.”
The Ministry also strongly condemned the violence, describing the incident as criminal and unacceptable.
“The Ministry unequivocally condemns the violent incident at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.”
It added that:
“The Ministry considers this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such conduct has no place within Ghana’s educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The unrest reportedly led to extensive damage to school property, while six students have been arrested as police continue investigations into the incident.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline, law and order, and safe learning environments in schools across the country, stressing that acts of violence would be dealt with in accordance with the laws governing the education sector.
