Parliament has passed a bill to establish a National Defence University for the Ghana Armed Forces, with the legislation now awaiting presidential assent.
Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced this during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 20, 2026.
He described the establishment of the university as a long-standing aspiration of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“It was a desire of the Ghana Armed Forces to have a National Defence University, and the bill has since been passed by Parliament and is awaiting the President’s assent,” the Minister said.
The proposed National Defence University is expected to serve as a centre for academic and professional military education, training and research for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and allied institutions.
The institution is also expected to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in areas such as defence studies, security, strategy and leadership.
Its establishment is intended to strengthen professional military education in Ghana and position the country as a centre for defence and security studies in West Africa.
Once the President assents to the bill, the Ministry of Education is expected to work with the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces to operationalise the university.
The process is expected to include the appointment of a governing council, recruitment of academic and administrative staff, and development of the necessary academic structures and programmes.
