Two outstanding students of the Department of Information Science at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have received scholarships from GCB Bank PLC in recognition of their academic excellence.
The beneficiaries, Jessica Adwoa Sersah and Kingsley Amankwa Awuakye, both Level 200 students, recorded impressive CGPAs of 3.7 and 4.0 respectively. Each received a cash prize of GH¢2,000.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the Head of Department, Dr. Kwaku Anhwere Barfi, commended the students for their achievements and praised GCB Bank for its continued investment in education.
He noted that such support helps to ease financial pressure on students and their families while motivating others to strive for academic excellence.
The Central Regional Manager of GCB Bank PLC, Mr. Anthony Sowah, said the initiative forms part of the bank’s broader commitment to empowering young people.
He explained that the bank’s youth-focused programmes aim to promote financial literacy, access to banking services, and mentorship, especially in a fast-changing digital economy.
Mr. Sowah encouraged the beneficiaries to remain focused and use the opportunity to develop their full potential.
He also urged young people to adopt a culture of saving and investing early, stressing that financial awareness is key to future success.
The Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Daniel Agyapong, expressed appreciation to GCB Bank and advised the students to maintain discipline and uphold good character.
Similarly, the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Rev. Prof. Richard Ansah, congratulated the awardees and encouraged them to remain committed to their studies and make a positive impact on society.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Kingsley Amankwa Awuakye expressed gratitude to the bank.
“The scholarship will ease the financial burden on our families and boost our academic performance. We will work hard to justify the confidence reposed in us,” he said.
GCB Bank indicated that it plans to expand the scholarship initiative to support more students in the coming years.
