The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a nationwide initiative to upgrade infrastructure and learning facilities across Ghana’s senior high schools, aimed at bridging quality gaps and improving access to secondary education.
Speaking at the 75th Anniversary celebration of Mawuli School in Ho on Saturday, October 25, 2025, Hon. Iddrisu revealed that government has allocated GHC300 million in the 2026 national budget to fund the upgrading of schools across all categories.
He said the programme, part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda for Education, seeks to transform the country’s education landscape by raising the standards of Category C and B schools and enhancing facilities in Category A institutions.
“Government is committed to ensuring equity in quality education. Under the Reset Agenda, we will double the capacity of some schools and improve their facilities so that no child is disadvantaged because of where they attend school,” the Hon. Iddrisu stated.
According to the Minister, Category C schools will be upgraded to Category B, while selected Category B schools will be elevated to Category A status, with corresponding improvements in infrastructure, teaching resources, and academic support.
He also disclosed that an additional $180 million, secured with support from the World Bank, will be invested to complement the national upgrade programme. The funds will target classroom expansion, dormitory construction, science laboratories, ICT centres, and teacher development initiatives.
The Minister underscored that the government’s investments are designed to sustain the quality of the Free Senior High School policy by improving conditions in less-endowed schools and expanding access to quality education nationwide.
“These upgrades are not just about buildings — they are about giving every Ghanaian student, whether in a Category A or C school, a fair chance at quality education,” he added.
Hon. Iddrisu made the announcement shortly after cutting sod for the construction of a 650-bed dormitory for boys and girls at Mawuli School, a project expected to ease congestion and improve student welfare.
The Education Minister reaffirmed that the government remains focused on building a robust, inclusive, and equitable education system that reflects President Mahama’s vision of making learning meaningful and accessible to all.
