President John Dramani Mahama has appointed an eight-member committee to organise the National Education Forum.
The committee, led by former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor George K. T. Oduro, has just two weeks to submit its report.
A press statement signed by the Acting Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Sunday stated that the appointment demonstrates the President’s commitment to fulfilling his pledge to the people of Ghana regarding educational development.
According to the statement, the committee would also be responsible for drafting a national education policy framework and proposing an implementation plan within three weeks after the forum.
“This timeline suggests the government’s urgency in advancing educational reforms,” it explained.
The committee’s mandate includes developing themes for stakeholder engagement, identifying key participants from various sectors and creating a comprehensive agenda for the forum.
The forum aims to bring together various stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers from both private and public sectors, civil society organisations, religious bodies, political parties, and traditional leaders.
A notable aspect of the committee’s terms of reference is the inclusion of Ghanaian educational researchers from the diaspora, which shows the government’s intention to tap into global expertise.
Other members of the committee include prominent education experts Professor Goski Alabi, Professor Rosemary Bosu, Dr Samuel Awuku, Professor Smile Dzisi, Kofi Asare, Stephen Owusu, and Inusah Shiraz.
The committee is expected to announce the forum’s date and venue in their upcoming report.
