The University of Ghana (UG) has announced a significant restructuring of its Department of Modern Languages, effective today, August 1, 2024. This move, approved by the UG Council, represents a strategic effort to better organise and optimise the university’s language programmes.
The restructuring will lead to the creation of two new departments: the Department of African and Asian Languages and the Department of European Languages.
The Department of African and Asian Languages will include the Arabic, Chinese, and Kiswahili sections, reflecting a diverse range of linguistic and cultural studies from these regions. Meanwhile, the Department of European Languages will comprise the Russian and Spanish sections, focusing on the rich literary and cultural traditions of Europe.
According to UG officials, this change aims to enhance the university’s language offerings by allowing each new department to develop a more specialised focus. This specialisation is expected to foster deeper academic inquiry and provide students with more targeted and comprehensive language education. Additionally, the restructuring aims to enhance resource allocation, guaranteeing each department receives the necessary support and attention to thrive.
The university urges all stakeholders, including students, faculty, and administrative staff, to note these changes and adjust accordingly. The university views this development as a progressive step to fortify its academic programmes and uphold its standing as a leading institution for higher education in Ghana and beyond.
By creating distinct departments, UG aims to promote a more focused approach to language education, encouraging both academic and cultural exchange. The university remains committed to providing high-quality education and believes that this restructuring will contribute significantly to achieving that goal.
