The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held a University-wide seminar on research capacity building, grantsmanship and innovation commercialisation as part of efforts to strengthen research excellence and promote innovation-driven development across the institution.
Organised by the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Development (DRID) in collaboration with the University’s Division of Human Resources, the seminar took place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the North Campus Assembly Hall, UEW.
The event brought together academic staff, researchers and other stakeholders from across the University community to discuss ways of improving research competencies, strengthening grant acquisition strategies and advancing the commercialisation of research outputs.
In his opening address, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, underscored the role of research in driving institutional growth, national development and global competitiveness, and encouraged faculty members to position themselves to attract competitive research funding and translate research findings into innovations with practical impact.
The Director of DRID, Prof. Enoch F. Sam, said the Directorate remains committed to building sustainable research systems within the University, adding that strengthening grantsmanship skills and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration are key to increasing UEW’s research visibility and impact.
The seminar also featured presentations by guest speakers including Prof. Charles Anum Adams of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi; Prof. David Teye Doku, Director of DRIC at the University of Cape Coast (UCC); and Mr. Julius Lamptey, Senior Research and Policy Officer at Impact Investing Ghana.
The resource persons shared practical insights into proposal development, navigating the funding landscape, research leadership, intellectual property management and pathways for commercialising research outputs. The seminar also highlighted the importance of aligning research initiatives with national priorities, industry needs and global funding opportunities.
Interactive sessions allowed participants to seek clarification on grant application processes, research partnerships and mechanisms for translating academic research into market-ready innovations.
The seminar forms part of UEW’s broader strategic agenda to enhance research productivity, increase external funding and promote innovation-led development. Participants, the University said, expressed appreciation for the initiative and called for sustained capacity-building programmes to consolidate the gains made.
UEW reaffirmed its commitment to supporting faculty and researchers in strengthening research excellence, grantsmanship and innovation commercialisation.
