The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cut sod for the construction of a 650-capacity dormitory for both boys and girls of Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, as part of efforts to expand infrastructure and improve learning conditions across Ghana’s secondary schools.
The ceremony, held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, coincided with the 75th Anniversary celebration of Mawuli School. Addressing staff, students, and alumni, Mr. Iddrisu described the event as a special milestone and his first official visit to celebrate the achievements of the school since assuming office as Minister for Education.
“And then for you ladies and gentlemen of the media, since my assumption of office as Minister for Education, this is my first to celebrate Mawuli Senior High School,” Hon. Iddrisu stated during the sod-cutting ceremony.
Hon. Iddrisu announced that government has allocated GHC300 million in the 2026 national budget to upgrade several Category B schools to Category A status. He said the initiative forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda to improve educational standards and equity across the country’s secondary school system.
According to the Minister, the programme will also see Category C schools elevated to Category B, while Category A institutions such as Mawuli SHS will benefit from major infrastructure and quality enhancements.
“Under President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, we may double the capacity of schools like Mawuli SHS and improve their standing as Category A institutions,” he said.
Mr. Iddrisu further disclosed that an equivalent of $180 million, with support from the World Bank, has been earmarked to finance the nationwide school upgrade initiative. He emphasized that strengthening the capacity of senior high schools is critical to sustaining the quality of Ghana’s Free SHS programme.
“Undoubtedly, they remain the source of quality Free SHS,” he noted.
The new dormitory project at Mawuli SHS is expected to ease accommodation pressure on students and create a more conducive environment for learning and personal development as the school continues to expand.
