UG Basketball Team Wins Gold At 8th FASU Games

University of Ghana (UG) has won Gold at the ongoing 8th Africa University Sports Federation (FASU) games in the men's basketball category.

Team UG beat Midland State University from Zimbabwe in the finals by 96-52 scores to win the prestigious title.

This makes University of Ghana the first Ghanaian institution to win Gold at a major international tournament. The team emerged champions of two major basketball competitions in Ghana this year. They won 2016 GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) games.

The FASU Games is jointly organised by the University of Johannesburg, the Tshwane University of Technology, University Sport South Africa (USSA) and the African University Sports Federation (FASU). For the first time in FASU history, athletes compete in university teams instead of national teams.

A total of 44 universities representing 14 countries and about 700 athletes are participating in this year's games, and are competing in 10 sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, 3x3 basketball, chess, football, netball, tennis, table tennis and volleyball.

The 8th FASU Games which commenced on Sunday, 26th June, 2016 will end on Saturday, 2nd July 2016.
