Osu Presec, Kumasi Girls Win 2018 Sprite Ball Championship

Presbyterian Senior High School (Osu PRESEC) defeated Mfantsipim for the second time in three days to win the 2018 Sprite Ball Championship on Saturday at the El Wak Stadium.

Osu PRESEC were unable to repeat the massive margin of their first victory over four-time winners Mfantsipim which ended 45-14 but came from behind to edge their second meeting 25-22.

According to basketballghana.com, the score was tied at 12 at halftime with Mfantsipim ending the half on a poor run after dominating the early minutes of the game.

Mfantsipim Guard Gabriel Hammond buried two straight three-point shots to give his side a 20-16 lead. PRESEC Guard Prince Lumorvi scored from the free throw line as he got fouled on several drives to the basket.

The loss is Mfantsipim’s third straight miss on the Sprite Ball Title after falling to St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School in the past two editions of the competition.

PRESEC Point Guard Joel Koboayere was named Most Valuable Player of the competition.

In the girls final, Kumasi Girls High School clinched the giant gold Sprite Ball Championship trophy after beating Accra Wesley Girls High School 30-29 in the final.

The Kumasi side won the Championship in the exciting finale in overtime after the score was tied at 27.

Kumasi Girls could have won the game at the end of regulation but Point Guard and tournament MVP, Rose Yeboah missed a free throw to complete a three-point play after getting fouled on a drive.

Accra Wesley took an 8-1 lead in the opening minutes of the first half but got pegged with a flurry from Kumasi Girls to lead 13-8.

However, Accra Wesley recovered well to end the first half on top courtesy a 15-13 lead with back to back made free throws.

In the end, the teams could not be separated and overtime had to be played with Center Abigail Agyapomaa converting a free throw with the game tied at 29 and a few seconds remaining on the clock.
