Team UG Leaves For World University Debate Championship In Mexico

The University of Ghana will be represented by two students from the University of Ghana Debate Society at the World University Debate Championship (WUDC) in Mexico from December 27, 2017, to January 4, 2018.

This will be the third appearance by students from the nation's premier university and the only tertiary institution in the country to participate in WUDC.

The first was in the Malaysia 2015 championship where it ranked 269. At the last edition in 2017, University of Ghana participants at the Hague in the Netherlands were ranked 214.

The World Universities Debating Championship also called ‘Worlds’ is an annual competition among debate societies of all universities in the world. The WUDC has been held annually since 1981.

It is designed to determine the best of the best in international English language debating.

Every year, the Championshion takes place in a different country and is hosted by a different university and by different debate societies.

The tournament gathers students from prestigious universities around the globe, featuring over 400 teams from around 90 countries.

Cached by one of the veteran university debaters, Antonio Edem Asinyo, who put the team together said they have been training for the past six weeks.

“Our performance at the world’s stage has been progressive and as the coach, it is my responsibility to improve the standard of UG with respect to debate and I am committed to doing that,” he said.
