GNUTS beat competition from University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Liberian Students' Association Ghana, Foreign Students' Association of Ghana, Ghana Nurse and Midwifery Training Association (GNMTA) and Private University Students Association (PUSAG) to win the coveted awards.
The association's National Coordinating Secretary, Mr Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, in an exclusive interview with GhCampus.com after picking the award, said the award is in recognition of the hard work of the Executives over the period and innovative initiatives undertaken by the union in addressing numerous challenges students and graduates are confronted with.
He revealed that the union set up a fashion company to provide job opportunities to young unemployed graduates and also an avenue to hone their skills in fashion.
"In 2014 the Union set up a Fashion company known as Whole Fashion Concept. Because we have realized that unemployment is always a problem as far as every year graduates are produced. This is the difference between GNUTS and other students Union," he said.
Formerly known as Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS), the new name: GNUTS, was adopted after the conversion of some Polytechnics into Technical Universities.
With the adoption of the new name, Abdul Rahman noted that the membership has been expanded to include other technical institutes in the country.
"So the constitutional review committee went and did their background checks and they thought it wise to expand our membership to cover the Technical Institutes. So because of that we decided to adopt the name GNUTS. Of course, we still have two Polytechnics yet to be converted into Technical Universities. That is Wa and Bolgatanga Polytechnics. So currently as we speak, GNUTS is our identity," he noted.
