HR Focus: Personal Development- 1

Over the past month, I have engaged you on different issues pertaining to the job market. We looked at what await you after school, touched on what employers really want in their prospective employees, discussed the topic “the art of budgeting and then answered a question on work experience. I hope the past month was insightful and informative.

This month, I would want us to discuss “Personal Development”.

It is no secret that there is a mismatch in the job market requirement and the academic curriculum, hence the need to personally develop skills and competencies that matches your choice of career. You need to fine tune your skills to best fit the opportunities available in the job market.

What is Personal Development?

The business dictionary defines “Personal Development as the process of improving oneself, through such activities as enhancing employment skills, increasing consciousness and building wealth”.
How do you personally develop yourself?

The first step to personal development is “Self Knowledge or Knowing Yourself”.

Before you can successfully develop yourself, you need to know you.

  1. Who are you?
  2. What are your interests and personal attributes?
  3. What are your values?
  4. What skills do you possess?
  5. What are past experiences?
  6. What are your goals and objectives?
  7. What is your career choice?

You need to do a thorough self-assessment exercise and discover you. It is important to reflect and know yourself. If you are unable to do this on your own, ask friends and family to help you answer the above listed questions.

If you are able to answer these questions, write a summary report about yourself.

This is the first step to personal development.
