As a student in a digital age, you need to be thinking of yourself as a brand.
Most employers consider your social media pages as an initial source of information about you.
Our profiles on social media contains very relevant information on the schools and colleges we attended, churches, associations, likes and what interest us. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn are just but a few social media platforms most of us subscribe to.
To build a strategic brand, you need to pen down answers to the following questions:
1. What do you wish for employers to associate with you when they visit your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media accounts?
2. Is there a specific skill, competence, expertise or qualities you wish to exhibit?
3. What is the digital footprint you want to create on the digital space?
Once you have answered these questions, do the following to build an online personal brand:
Firstly, secure a personal website( if it is not too much). A personal website makes your name more visible on the search engines. It doesn't need to be robust, it can be a two to three pages site with your resume linked to your social media accounts and a brief bio.
Secondly ,be purposeful in what you share on your platforms.
Every tweet you send, every status update you make, every picture you share contributes to your personal brand.
Therefore, be strategic about your daily posts online because it all forms part of your personal brand
Thirdly, produce value for your social media followers by creating or curating contents in line with your brand.
Finally, associate with other strong brands.
As the saying goes, show me your friend and I will show you your character.
Follow good personal brands online, mentors, celebrities worth associating with to build a strong personal brand.
Do not leave your online presence to chance in this digital age. It is very important to build a strategic personal brand for your future.
