University Of Ghana Makes It To Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings

Ghana’s premier university, the University of Ghana has been ranked in the band of 601-800 this year out of 800 institutions worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings.

The world university rankings are generated from five pillars, each of which represents a key area of higher education excellence: Teaching (the Learning Environment), Research (Volume, Income and Reputation), Citations (Research Influence), Industry Income (Knowledge Transfer), and International Outlook (Students, Staff and Research).

Among these pillars, University of Ghana’s strongest one was international outlook where it ranked in the 5th decile and its weakest pillar was teaching where it ranked in the last decile.

In this 2015-2016 World University Rankings released by THE, California Institute of Technology (US) was placed at the number one position and University of Oxford (UK) at 2nd position. In third position is Stanford University (US) followed by University of Cambridge (UK) and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology (US) at positions 4th and 5th respectively. Harvard University (US), Princeton University (US), Imperial College London (UK), ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (Switzerland) and University of Chicago (US) were ranked 6th,7th,8th,9th and 10th respectively.

No university in Africa was placed among the top 100 institutions, however, University of Cape Town (South Africa) was ranked at 120th position- the best ranked among world class and research-intensive universities on the African continent.

With University of Ghana being the only University making it to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the Public Affairs Director, Mrs Stella Amoa Awukubea in a statement published on the university’s website says this recognition places University of Ghana ahead of its peers in Ghana and a force to reckon with on the continent and on the global front.

She added that “the continued upward mobility of the University of Ghana in world rankings is an attestation of the University’s quest to become a world-class research intensive university over the next decade”.

In June this year, the University of Ghana was placed at 10th position by the Thompson Reuters rankings which listed top 10 tertiary institutions on the African.
