The purpose of the day is to publicise and promote the Home Economics profession. Therefore, members, member organisations and other professionals in the field scheduled this date to hold events and special activities with the aim of promoting the profession in all regions across the world.
The event organised by Ghana Home Economics Association (GHEA) in collaboration with the Department of Home Economics, UEW attracted industry players from the ten Regions in Ghana. Some dignitaries who graced the occasion are The Pro VC, Prof. Aful Broni, wife of the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Avorke, deputy registrar, C.Y Akwah, deputy dean of student affairs - Dr. Nana Annan, departmental heads and lectures.
The National President of GHEA, Dr. Enyonam C. Kudonoo in an earlier address remarked that Home Economics is the vehicle that transport healthy eating and healthy living in families in the world over. She also touched on some vices in the Ghanaian society. Some of which are: promoting of foreign foods with its health related issues to the detriment of local foods which are nutritious, wearing of clothes that are not climatic conducive and decline in respect for the elderly and people in higher positions. She however concluded by calling on the ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service to see the importance and benefits of Home Economics and promote the course in our second cycle institutions.
The key note address was given by Mrs. Esther Amoah, an alumni of UEW. She mentioned in her delivery that, Home Economics Has impacted many lives across the world as it equips generations with requisite skills and knowledge in becoming responsible citizens. She also added that, Home Economics over the years has played pivotal roles in poverty alleviation, gender equality and social protection.
The 2016/17 week celebration of the Home Economics students Association was also lunched at this function.
