The symposium was on the theme " Social Media & the 21st Century Communication Practitioner : The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"
In the welcome address, the President of the association, Ama Boatemaa Appiah-Kubi touched on the fact that, communication is the basis of our lives. She continued to say that even before the creation of the world, there was communication as God commanded that let there be light and there was light.
Hon. Kojo Asemenyi, MP for Gomoa East who was the guest of honour task the MPhil students to be good practitioners and be mindful of what they say and put out there. He also wished for the good of the department that he hoped the reputation of the department will be recognise in Ghana and the World at large.
Manasseh Azure Awuni, a media practitioner touched on many if not all as regards the good, the bad and the ugly of social media.
In his keynote address, he mentioned gathering of information, a source finding, tip offs, opinion sharing etc as reasons why people to visit social media.
Under the bad and ugly aspect of social media, he talked about fake news, mob justice, fake accounts and the lost of power of traditional media to break news.
He went on to advise the house to always cross check beyond social media and have a reliable source of information with concrete evidence before coming out with stories. He also warn people not to gossip on social media because it could actually be their CVs in the near future.
In conclusion, he said that we are in a fight as a country and as a media practitioner, your voice matter. Thus, you should not allow someone's voice overshadow your opinion or conscience.
