Jarvis Koffie Elected SRC President Of University Of Education, Winneba

Mr Jarvis Koffie has been elected as the next University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Students' Representative Council (SRC) President for the 2016/17 academic year.

The election which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, 19th April, 2016 was postponed to Wednesday, 20th April, 2016. It was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere with some polling stations recording a low voter turnout.

The exercise, amidst jubilation and heart broken saw Mr Jarvis Koffie elected as the next UEW SRC president for the 2016/17 academic year.

According to the EC, Mr. Carlos Adams Abdul - Latif , who spoke on Radio Windy Bay, a campus radio few hours after voting said, polling stations were open few minutes past 7am and closed at 5pm or late. In all, voting took place at ten polling station. South campus - 3, Central campus -1 and North campus - 6 respectively.

Meanwhile, after collation of results and certified by the EC, Mr Jarvis Koffie polled a total of 3305 votes, representing 55.7% as against Mr. Micheal Kwabena Asante's 2642 votes representing 44.43%. Micheal, who many thought was going to win or better still give Jarvis a run for him money rather bowed to a whopping 663 vote difference. Thus by the powers vested in him as the EC hereby declare Mr. Jarvis Koffie as President Elect.

Not only did UEW voted but history was made and a record set as well. From time in memorial, no single department in the history of the School has ever produced two President in an election. As it stands, the Special Education Department which produce the current Vice Chancellor of the University, has set a record difficult to break in the near future having now produced SRC President and NUGS President, in the person of Mr Enoch Ansah who won at all polling stations, in a single election. Some will say it is special education time.

However, this year's election was hugely influenced by political parties. Notability NDC and NPP. In fact, it was an election for Parties rather than students. Even though some appear to be helping the candidates in one way or the other, they were indirectly pushing their party agenda, going forward into National elections come November 2016. The least said the better because even at National NUGS level, the story is the same.

Henceforth, the activities of political parties supporting candidates needs to be crippled for the sake of student leadership.
