GRASAG-Legon President, Senate Chairman Call For Calm Amidst Electoral Disputes

The President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) - Legon, Mr Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh and the Chairman of the GRASAG UG Senate, Mr Atsu Mensah Prince are calling on all members of the association to remain calm as they take steps to resolve pending election-related disputes.

The two, in a statement sighted by GhCampus.com said, "The Executive Council has observed the ongoing brouhaha involving the some aggrieved members and candidates who claim to have misgiving about some aspects of this year's GRASAG-LEGON general elections. Some of these aggrieved members have come up with petitions which need to be heard.

Unfortunately, however, GRASAG-LEGON has suffered some constitutional crises regarding the proper composition of the Judicial Committee to grant audience and fair hearing to the said petitions. As of now, there is no statutory Judicial Committee to sit or hear any judicial matter brought before it."

To this end, the statement noted that, the Executive Council has opened nominations for interested persons to apply for membership of the Judicial Committee. It added that an emergency Senate meeting will be held on Thursday, 4th May, 2017 to consider the composition of the Judicial Committee.

"Realizing the urgency of the constituting the Judicial Committee to address the constitutional lacuna, the President invoked Chapter Four (8):13 of the constitution of GRASAG-Legon to request the Chairperson to Senate to call for an emergency Senate sitting. The Chairperson responded positively by informing members about an Emergency Senate sitting scheduled for Thursday 4th May, 2017 to consider the composition of a proper Judicial Committee to hear all judicial matters including those related to election petitions. The executive has opened nomination for the person to express interest in membership of the Judicial Committee. These nominees would be approved by the Senate," the statement added.

The President and the Chairman of Senate are calling on all members to remain calm whilst structures are put in place to resolve the crisis.
