UG Beef Up Security At Major Events; Uses Security Drone To Monitor July 2017 Congregation

The University of Ghana, Legon, has started using drones to monitor and gather intelligence and real-time insights into security and emergency situations for better control at its major events.

This action was part of several security measures put in place by the university security management to ensure absolute safety of lives and properties during this year's July Congregation.

Congregation is an important program on the university's calendar as it is on this occasion that the university presents various degrees and certificates to its students who have successfully completed their academic programmes. This occasion and

other major events attract huge presence of the general public posing serious safety and security threats to both lives and properties.

To better control or respond to emergency situations, the university deployed security drone to collect unlimited aerial data and provide real-time visibility into security threats and emergency situations during this year's graduation ceremonies held over two days.

The Head of Security at the University, Mr George Amofa-Fokuoh disclosed to GhCampus.com in an exclusive interview that, the drone spotted in the air around the Great Hall during the ceremonies was deployed by his team for security reasons.

"Yes! Because I have to ensure that, the people coming; the invited guests, the students and their families, the vehicles they brought, and those doing business- they must be safe," the chief security said, in response to our reporter's question on whether the drone spotted around was deployed by the university security.

He noted that modern security requires that measures must be put in place for the criminal to come and meet and not the otherwise.

In a related development, GhCampus.com also noticed that all graduating students were screened before they were allowed access to the Great Hall.
